Motorcycle insurance?

I am looking to get a motorcycle in the future and I know it takes time and money, but most people do not ride in the winter (NJ), so my question is, can I cancel my motorcycle insurance during winter months, so I am not paying all year round? Also, are there any reprocussions to doing this? Thanks.

1. Call Geico - that's who my hubby has his cycle insurance with and he's totally happy with them. I'm sure they would be happy to answer any questions you may have!
2. when you sign on just sign on for a certain amount of time. But dont drive it if you do not have the insurance another thing you have to worry about is the registration! If it needs to be renewed within the time that you do not have insurance you may have a problem.
3. i live in ky and on my motorcycle insurance i pay like 4 months out of the year..pretty much only riding season... the rest of the year i dont...its gieco motorcyle insurance..check it out....hope this helps!!
4. You really have to ask a broker there, because different jurisdictions may have different rules. In Manitoba, you would not cancel your insurance, because the premium is earned over the riding months. So, over the winter, you may be paying 5 or 10 dollars a month at most for registration and comprehensive, and full premiums in the summer, but, your coverage does not actually change. If there is an early spring, you can ride, if there is a really great day in the winter, you can ride, and don't have to make any changes. We have the same idea with boat insurance, which is not meant to be cancelled as the premium is earned over the boating season, and snowmobile insurance, where the premium is earned over the winter riding season.
5. It depends on your state law, I would say check with your DMV. Here in MD if you cancel your Insurance than you must turn in your plates. Doing this means you will have to pay the $100 to get your tags again when riding season starts. Also I have found that insurance premiums change so randomly that what you may be paying this year may not be the same the next. I would suggest cutting back your coverage. In the winter I usually just keep what is require in my state. Here you must at least have liability and I may keep comprehensive too depending on the cost. Hope that's helpful.
6. Another thing to keep in mind if you do not have insurance during the winter months, and the bike is stolen or damaged, you are then responsible for any costs, and obviously, can not file any kind of claim. We keep it on our bike all year round just to be safe.
7. Motorcyle insurance is cheap. Don't be a tight-wad.
8. Depending on what kind of bike you have, you might want to keep insurance even when you are not riding. If you have a nicer bike, I would suggest full coverage. In the event that somebody steals your bike, you are totally covered. Motorcycle thefts happen a lot b/c its so easy to steal one. I had two bikes and both got stolen from my apt complex. Good thing I was covered with Progressive insurance. They covered the costs of the bikes, so I didn't lose any money
9. I'm in NJ too. Simply call NJ Rider insurance. The website is ridewithrider.com . They have the best prices around. If you go with them you won't mind paying all year round for rull coverage. Thank me later.
10. You might piss off your insurance company if you try to cancel and reinstate every year. Ask them if you can just get a deal where you won't ride in a certain period. A good agent will help you out there.
11. don't use Geico. ask if you can switch to liability only in the off season. That way, you don't screw yourself if you want to take it out. If you are already doing liability only, just cancel and restate, but that's being REALLY cheap.
